Joy Ogwu, a distinguished diplomat, academic, and former Minister of Foreign Affairs, has died at the age of 79. Her passing marks the loss of one of Nigeria’s most prominent figures in foreign policy, known for her significant contributions on both national and international stages.

Ogwu served as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations from May 2008 to May 2017. During her tenure, she notably held the presidency of the UN Security Council in July 2010 and again in October 2011, where she advocated for global peace, disarmament, and international cooperation. Her leadership at the UN solidified her reputation as a trailblazer in diplomatic circles.

Before her impactful role at the UN, Ogwu was the Director-General of the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA), where she played a crucial role in shaping Nigeria’s foreign policy and promoting the study of international relations.

In a statement released by President Bola Tinubu, he expressed deep sorrow over Ogwu’s death, calling it “a great loss to the nation.” He praised her as a “trailblazer” who achieved remarkable heights through her dedication and excellence. The President underscored her efforts in projecting Nigeria’s voice on the global stage and her relentless work for peace, security, and women’s rights.

Tinubu extended his condolences to Ogwu’s family, which includes her five children, grandchildren, and siblings, as well as to the diplomatic and academic communities that benefited from her mentorship and guidance.

Joy Ogwu’s legacy as a leading figure in Nigerian diplomacy will be remembered for her unwavering commitment to global issues and her role in advancing the nation’s interests on the world stage.
