The Kano State Government has intensified efforts to restore potable water supply across the state with plans to fully rehabilitate the Watari Water Treatment Plant, The Bureau News reports.
The Acting Commissioner for Water Resources, Dahiru Muhammad Hashim, disclosed this during an inspection visit to the facility following the recent award of contracts for the rehabilitation of the Challawa and Tamburawa water treatment plants.
Nigeria News Today: Kano Targets Full Water Supply Through Major Rehabilitation Projects
Hashim said the ongoing rehabilitation of the Challawa and Tamburawa plants is expected to restore about 83 percent of water supply within the Greater Kano area.
He added that the Watari Water Treatment Plant will complement these efforts by supplying the remaining 17 percent needed to meet water demand across Kano metropolis and nearby communities.
According to the commissioner, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s administration is committed to ensuring that all three major treatment plants operate at full capacity to permanently address water shortages in the state.
The Bureau News Reports Watari Plant Operating at Half Capacity
Hashim explained that the Watari Water Treatment Plant, located along the Greater Kano water corridor, has the capacity to produce approximately 70 million litres of water daily.
The facility serves communities within a 50-kilometre radius of Kano city, including Bagwai, Bichi and Tsanyawa Local Government Areas.
“Our technical assessment confirmed that while the plant was designed to produce 75 million litres per day, it is currently functioning at approximately 50 percent capacity. We are focused on bridging this gap to restore full operational capacity,” Hashim said.
Kano Government Assures Residents of Lasting Solution
The acting commissioner assured residents that the state government is determined to end persistent water scarcity through strategic investments in water infrastructure.
He said the rehabilitation of Watari, alongside ongoing work at Challawa and Tamburawa, will significantly improve water production and distribution across Kano State.
The Bureau News reports that the intervention forms part of the Kano State Government’s broader plan to provide reliable access to clean and safe water for millions of residents.
