In the evolving landscape of Nigeria’s security architecture, sustained reform and stable leadership remain indispensable. It is in this context that we, representing a coalition of civil society organizations, publicly commend the Honourable Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, for his resolute and reform-driven stewardship of the Ministry of Interior.

Under his leadership, the ministry has demonstrated renewed vigor in strengthening internal security institutions and promoting accountability across its agencies. These efforts have not gone unnoticed by stakeholders committed to national development and public safety.

Particularly noteworthy is the leadership of Abubakar Audi Ahmed, OFR, mni, Comptroller General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC). Since assuming office, he has championed significant institutional reforms aimed at enhancing operational efficiency, improving personnel welfare, reinforcing discipline, and strengthening the protection of critical national assets and infrastructure.

The progress recorded within the NSCDC in recent years is not incidental; it is the product of deliberate restructuring, strategic capacity-building initiatives, and a firm commitment to professional excellence. These reforms have positioned the Corps as a more responsive and effective component of Nigeria’s broader security framework.

As his tenure draws to a close, we strongly and respectfully urge the Honourable Minister to consider a tenure extension for the Comptroller General. The scale and depth of the reforms underway require continuity of leadership to ensure consolidation and long-term sustainability. Premature disruption at this stage risks slowing the momentum that has been painstakingly built.

Such a decision would align seamlessly with the Renewed Hope agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which emphasizes institutional strengthening, national security enhancement, and sustainable governance reforms. Ensuring leadership continuity within the NSCDC would reinforce the administration’s commitment to these objectives.

Nigeria’s security challenges demand consistency, competence, and courage in leadership. We believe that extending the tenure of the current Comptroller General represents a strategic and forward-looking step in safeguarding the gains already achieved.

We remain confident in the Honourable Minister’s patriotism and sound judgment and trust that this appeal will receive favorable consideration in the broader interest of national stability and prosperity.

Nigeria’s security sector reforms must not only begin well—they must end well.
