The Controller General of the Federal Fire Service, Olumode Samuel Adeyemi, on Monday visited the scene of the recent fire outbreak at Singa Market in Kano as part of efforts to assess the damage and strengthen fire safety measures across the state’s commercial centers.

The visit followed a directive from the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, after a fire incident that occurred at the market on Saturday. Firefighters were still at the scene conducting damping-down operations to prevent any re-ignition.

During the inspection, Adeyemi assessed the operational response and engaged with emergency personnel, commending their efforts in containing the fire and protecting nearby properties. He described their swift action as critical in limiting further losses.

As part of stakeholder engagement, the Controller General also met with leaders of the Singa Market Development Association (SIMDA) and the Abubakar Rimi Market Traders Association (AMATA). Discussions focused on practical strategies to reduce fire risks in densely populated trading areas.

Addressing traders and association leaders, Adeyemi conveyed the minister’s concern over the incident and announced plans to establish strategically located fire stations in major markets across Kano State. According to him, the initiative is aimed at significantly reducing emergency response times and ensuring a permanent fire service presence within commercial hubs.

He urged traders to collaborate closely with the Fire Service, stressing that fire prevention requires shared responsibility, prompt reporting of emergencies, and strict adherence to safety regulations.

Leaders of SIMDA and AMATA welcomed the proposal and pledged their cooperation with the Federal Fire Service to enhance safety standards and prevent future incidents in the markets.
