Arabian Sea—The U.S. military shot down an Iranian drone that approached the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln while it was operating in the Arabian Sea on Tuesday, according to U.S. officials, in an incident that underscores rising tensions between Washington and Tehran.

The unmanned aerial vehicle, identified as an Iranian Shahed-139 drone, was flying toward the carrier strike group when it was intercepted and destroyed by a U.S. F-35 fighter jet, officials said. They described the action as a defensive measure to protect the ship and its crew.

The USS Abraham Lincoln, a Nimitz-class nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, is deployed in the region as part of the United States’ ongoing naval presence aimed at deterring hostilities and safeguarding maritime security along key international waterways.

The encounter comes amid heightened military activity across the Middle East. The United States has recently reinforced its forces in the region, strengthening air defenses and maintaining an expanded naval presence near Iran and surrounding waters.

Security analysts say such confrontations reflect growing friction between the two countries, fueled by broader regional conflicts and proxy engagements stretching across the Arabian Gulf, the Red Sea, and neighboring areas. The tensions have drawn international attention as policymakers consider both diplomatic and military responses.

U.S. officials have not outlined any immediate follow-up actions but emphasized that protecting American personnel and assets remains a priority. Further statements from U.S. defense authorities, as well as potential responses from Iran, are expected as the situation develops.
