Nigeria News Today: From Humble Beginnings to Political Leadership

Late Honourable Muhammadu Usman Ankwe, regarded as one of the new-generation politicians in Kebbi State, began his journey as a Hajj guide before rising through the ranks of public service.

His leadership qualities later earned him the position of Chairman of Zuru Local Government Area, where he distinguished himself through impactful governance and grassroots engagement.

Following his performance, he was appointed Commissioner by former Governor Sa’idu Usman Dakingari and was also conferred with the traditional title of Lifidan by the late Emir of Zuru, Major-General Muhammadu Sani Sami Gomo II.

Rise to Speakership and Legislative Leadership

In the build-up to the 2023 general elections, Ankwe emerged as a strong advocate of unity, peaceful coexistence, and development, earning widespread endorsement from community leaders.

He subsequently won election to represent Zuru constituency in the Kebbi State House of Assembly.

Upon inauguration, the 24-member Assembly unanimously elected him as Speaker, a reflection of confidence in his leadership and track record.

His tenure as Speaker was marked by strong collaboration with the executive arm of government, particularly under Governor Nasir Idris, which contributed to accelerated socio-economic development across the state.

Addressing Criticism and Legislative Independence

At a point, his leadership faced criticism, with allegations that the Assembly operated as a rubber-stamp legislature due to the swift passage of executive bills.

“If mobilising honourable members to support the administration’s developmental programmes can be called rubber-stamp, so be it. I have no regret,” Ankwe said during a media briefing.

The controversy reportedly led to an attempted impeachment, which he survived.

Legacy of Service and Constituency Impact

At the grassroots level, Ankwe demonstrated unwavering commitment to improving the welfare of his constituents.

His achievements included the construction of inter-community bridges, provision and rehabilitation of boreholes, installation of electricity transformers, and monthly financial support ranging from N5,000 to N10,000 for vulnerable groups, including widows and the elderly.

He was also instrumental in advocating for the reconstruction of the Koko–Zuru federal road. Notably, he accompanied Governor Nasir Idris to meet President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, presenting evidence of the hardship faced by residents due to the abandoned project.

This intervention led to the revocation of the contract and eventual transfer of the project to the Kebbi State Government.

Champion of Fair Representation

Late Ankwe was known for promoting fairness and inclusivity, often engaging the governor to ensure equitable distribution of appointments and projects for his constituents.

He also played a key role in discouraging divisive political practices within the Zuru Emirate, advocating instead for unity and collective progress.

Final Moments and Tributes

Governor Nasir Idris, in his condolence message, described the late Speaker as a committed lawmaker and outstanding leader.

“His devotion, humility, wisdom, and dedication to the service of Kebbi State distinguished him as a true democrat and patriot,” the governor stated.

Honourable Muhammadu Usman Ankwe passed away at a hospital in Egypt on Monday, April 6, 2026. He is survived by his wife and five children.

The Bureau News reports that his legacy of service, humility, and inclusive leadership will continue to resonate across Kebbi State and beyond.

May Allah grant him eternal rest.
