The Kogi State Police Command has announced that normalcy has been restored in Oganenigu Community, Dekina Local Government Area, following recent tension linked to clashes between some villagers and herders.
The Bureau News reports that the intervention followed the immediate deployment of tactical teams to the area to prevent a breakdown of law and order.
In a statement issued on Monday, the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Saliu Oyiza Afusat, said the Commissioner of Police, CP Naziru Bello Kankarofi, directed the deployment of operatives from the Police Mobile Force and the Violent Crime Response Unit to the troubled community.
According to the statement, the tension stemmed from longstanding disputes between residents and herders in the area.
The Command explained that some residents had temporarily fled their homes out of fear of possible reprisal attacks, but confidence-building patrols are now underway to reassure the community and facilitate their safe return.
“Contrary to claims in a circulating video, only one death has been officially confirmed,” the statement said.
The police urged members of the public to disregard unverified reports of additional casualties, stressing that investigations are still ongoing.
ASP Afusat stated that the Divisional Police Officer and other deployed officers are actively engaging traditional rulers, community leaders and stakeholders to maintain peace and encourage residents to resume their normal activities.
CP Naziru Bello Kankarofi reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property across Kogi State.
He also commended the tactical teams for their swift response and professionalism in stabilising the situation.
The Bureau News reports that security agencies remain on ground in Oganenigu to ensure lasting peace and prevent any further violence.
