Former President Goodluck Jonathan has refuted claims suggesting he implied that former President Muhammadu Buhari had any connection with Boko Haram. This clarification follows misinterpretations of his remarks made during the book launch of former Chief of Defence Staff, Lucky Irabor.

In a statement signed by his spokesman, Ikechukwu Eze, Jonathan expressed concern over misleading reports that suggested he alleged Boko Haram nominated Buhari for dialogue with the Federal Government, implying his complicity in the group’s activities.

Jonathan emphasized that his comments were misrepresented, stating, “At no time did Dr. Jonathan suggest, imply, or insinuate that President Buhari had any connection with Boko Haram.” He explained that his remarks were intended to illustrate Boko Haram’s manipulative tactics, referring to instances where individuals falsely claimed to represent the group.

He further clarified that Boko Haram often exploited the names of respected public figures to create confusion and undermine public confidence in the government.

Jonathan raised a rhetorical question regarding the logic behind the claims linking Buhari to Boko Haram: “If indeed Buhari was their choice negotiator, why didn’t Boko Haram expeditiously bring their evil terrorist agenda to an end when he became president?”

He concluded by reaffirming both Buhari’s and his own commitment to fighting terrorism, stating that both leaders shared a dedication to restoring peace and stability in Nigeria. Jonathan urged the public to disregard any misinterpretations of his remarks, emphasizing the importance of a truthful understanding of Nigeria’s challenges.
