BREAKING NEWS: National Boundary Commission Settles Ette Boundary Dispute, Affirms Community Under Kogi State

By Queen Madaki

The National Boundary Commission (NBC) has officially affirmed that Ette Community falls within the administrative jurisdiction of Kogi State, effectively resolving the long-standing boundary dispute between Enugu State and Kogi State over the area.

This clarification was contained in a letter issued by the National Boundary Commission dated December 7, 2025.

According to the Commission, a revised map detailing the Enugu–Kogi interstate boundary alignment—forwarded to both state governments on July 14, 2025—clearly places Ette Community within Kogi State’s administrative boundaries.

The NBC further directed the Enugu State Government to immediately suspend all activities in Ette Community, including land encroachment, land parcellation, fencing, and a proposed chieftaincy coronation scheduled for December 29, 2025.

The Commission stated that such activities were inconsistent with its official boundary determination and could escalate tensions in the affected area.

In the same communication, the National Boundary Commission urged the Kogi State Government to take urgent and necessary steps to guarantee the safety, security, and wellbeing of residents of Ette Community.

It specifically emphasised the need for adequate security presence to maintain peace and enable the smooth execution of the forthcoming boundary delineation exercise.

The NBC’s position was subsequently confirmed by the Executive Chairman of Igbo-Eze North Local Government Area during a meeting with his close aides on December 17, 2025.

During the meeting, the Chairman instructed that all activities previously led by Enugu State authorities in Ette Community must cease immediately in strict compliance with the directives of the National Boundary Commission.

He stated that Enugu State, as a responsible government, would fully align with the decisions of the NBC, noting that the Commission remains the constitutionally recognised body empowered to determine interstate boundaries.

The Chairman further urged all government officials and aides to adhere strictly to the Commission’s directives in order to prevent unnecessary conflict.

Meanwhile, stakeholders have called on the Kogi State Government to expedite action in providing comprehensive security support to the National Boundary Commission.

This security presence, they noted, is critical to safeguarding officials of the Commission and facilitating a smooth, transparent, and hitch-free boundary delineation process in Ette Community.

Residents of the area have expressed hope that the resolution will bring lasting peace and end decades of uncertainty surrounding their administrative identity.
