The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has made a significant stride in the fight against drug abuse by publicly destroying 8,166.95 kilograms of assorted illicit substances in Yobe State. This marks a historic first for the state, underscoring the agency’s commitment to transparency and accountability in its operations.

Retired Brigadier General Mohamed Marwa, Chairman and Chief Executive of the NDLEA, described the destruction as a “historic and symbolic milestone” in the ongoing battle against drug-related crimes. Represented by Ahmed Ningi, the agency’s Director of Operations and General Investigations, Marwa emphasized that the event demonstrated the agency’s dedication to ensuring seized drugs do not re-enter circulation.

“This exercise is not only a statutory requirement but a public demonstration of victory over criminal enterprises,” Marwa stated. He highlighted that, since the establishment of the Yobe Command in 2003, a total of 16,011.13 kilograms of illicit drugs have been seized, including substantial amounts of Cannabis Sativa, psychotropic substances, cocaine, and heroin.

The destroyed substances were verified by the NDLEA Directorate of Forensics and included 6,791.249 kilograms of Cannabis Sativa and 1,375.65 kilograms of psychotropic substances. Marwa noted that while 8,166.95 kilograms were approved for destruction by the Federal High Court in Damaturu, an additional 7,844.18 kilograms are still pending.

The NDLEA’s achievements in Yobe also include the arrest of 2,345 suspects, securing 349 convictions, and rehabilitating 11 drug-dependent individuals. The agency has conducted over 190 sensitization campaigns across schools, communities, and religious institutions, furthering its demand reduction strategy through the establishment of a War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) Club.

Marwa called for collective responsibility in the fight against drug abuse, urging collaboration among the government, security agencies, traditional rulers, religious leaders, and the public. He expressed gratitude to the Yobe government, led by Governor Mai Mala Buni, for its ongoing support, including the recent donation of a Hilux vehicle to the state command.

In his remarks, the Deputy Governor of Yobe, Alhaji Idi Gubana, reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to supporting the NDLEA and other security agencies. He emphasized the administration’s focus on youth empowerment and education as vital components in curbing drug abuse.

“Drug abuse has contributed greatly to criminal activities in our society,” Gubana said, pledging continued support for rehabilitation efforts and ensuring that Yobe remains a drug-free state.

This public destruction of illicit drugs not only serves as a testament to the NDLEA’s efforts but also as a vital reminder of the ongoing challenges posed by drug abuse in the region.
