AFCON 2025 playmaker Alex Iwobi has expressed cautious optimism about Nigeria’s chances of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, insisting that the Super Eagles are not giving up hope despite an uncertain path to the tournament.
Speaking amid growing concern over the team’s qualification campaign, the Fulham midfielder admitted that the situation remains tense but stressed that belief within the squad is still strong.
“We are still waiting and still fighting,” Iwobi said. “Nothing is decided yet. We know what it means to represent Nigeria at the World Cup, and we’re doing everything we can to make it happen.”
Nigeria’s qualification journey has been closely watched by fans, with inconsistent results putting pressure on the team to deliver in their remaining fixtures. The Super Eagles, three-time African champions, have historically been a regular presence at the World Cup and are eager to avoid missing out on football’s biggest stage.
Iwobi, who played a key creative role during the AFCON 2025 campaign, emphasized the importance of unity and focus as the team prepares for crucial matches ahead. According to the midfielder, the players understand the expectations of millions of supporters back home.
“We know the fans are counting on us,” he added. “We just have to stay focused, work hard, and take each game step by step.”
Coaches and analysts have also urged patience, noting that qualification remains within reach if the team can string together positive results. With several matches still to play, the Super Eagles’ fate remains in their own hands.
For now, both players and supporters continue to wait anxiously, hopeful that Nigeria will once again book a ticket to the global showpiece in 2026.
