US Forces Seize Russian-Flagged Oil Tanker Marinera After Trans-Atlantic Pursuit

Nigeria News Today: United States military and Coast Guard personnel have seized control of a sanctioned oil tanker reflagged as a Russian vessel after a prolonged pursuit across the North Atlantic Ocean.
The ship, originally known as Bella 1, was intercepted on Wednesday after evading a US maritime blockade targeting vessels transporting sanctioned oil linked to Venezuela. The vessel, renamed the Marinera and sailing under a Russian flag, was boarded by US forces between Iceland and the British Isles, according to multiple reports.
The vessel had been subject to US sanctions since 2024 for its role in carrying restricted cargo. US European Command confirmed the seizure following a seizure order issued by a US federal court. The operation involved coordinated action by the US Coast Guard, Department of Homeland Security, the Department of Justice and military assets.
Officials say the tanker had previously avoided boarding attempts in the Caribbean Sea in late December and subsequently altered its course northwards. During the pursuit, the ship was observed painting a Russian flag and then re-registering under Russian jurisdiction, a move intended to complicate its legal status.
Tanker Pursuit and Strategic Enforcement
US forces had been tracking the vessel for weeks. Surveillance assets including maritime patrol aircraft and naval cutters shadowed the tanker as it progressed through international waters. British and other allied reconnaissance units contributed to the monitoring effort.
The seizure marks a high-profile escalation in Washington’s enforcement of sanctions policies targeting what US officials describe as a “shadow fleet” of tankers used to transport Venezuelan and other restricted oil overseas. A second vessel, identified as the Sophia, was also reportedly intercepted in a separate operation near the Caribbean.
International Legal and Diplomatic Reactions
Russia has condemned the action, with statements from the Russian Transport Ministry and Foreign Ministry asserting that the boarding of Marinera in international waters violated the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. Moscow has demanded assurances for the safety and repatriation of the tanker’s Russian crew and criticised the use of force against a ship registered under Russian jurisdiction.
US officials maintain that the seizure was conducted in accordance with US law, citing the vessel’s sanctioned status and court authorisation for the action.
Wider Context
The operation comes amid heightened geopolitical tension following a US military intervention in Venezuela and ongoing efforts by the Trump administration to disrupt oil shipments that officials say fund illicit networks and undermine sanctions enforcement. The extended pursuit of the Marinera underscores the complexity of international maritime law and sanction enforcement in contested geopolitical environments.
