The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has announced the resumption of normal fare operations across all train corridors nationwide, following the conclusion of the Federal Government-approved 50 percent fare reduction for the festive season.

The special yuletide discount, which officially ended on Sunday, January 4, 2026, was described by the corporation as a major success that recorded strong passenger turnout and smooth operations nationwide.

High Passenger Turnout Across Rail Corridors

Speaking on the outcome of the initiative, the Managing Director of the NRC, Kayode Opeifa, said the discounted fares encouraged thousands of Nigerians to travel safely and affordably during the festive period.

He noted that the intervention eased the financial burden of holiday travel and reinforced rail transportation as a reliable and cost-effective mode of mobility.

According to him, major standard gauge corridors including Lagos–Ibadan, Abuja–Kaduna, and Warri–Itakpe recorded steady passenger flow, while the narrow gauge Mass Transit Train (MTT) services also experienced consistent patronage.

Smooth Operations and Effective Crowd Management

The NRC stated that train services operated largely as scheduled throughout the festive season, with orderly boarding processes, timely departures, and adequate accommodation of passengers across all corridors.

Stations nationwide reportedly witnessed smooth ticketing processes, both online and onsite, with customer service officers providing assistance, particularly to first-time rail users.

Security and Staff Commended

Opeifa praised NRC staff for their professionalism and dedication, adding that the festive operations were largely hitch-free.

He also acknowledged the role of security agencies and other stakeholders in ensuring passenger safety at stations and onboard trains.

The management further expressed appreciation to passengers for their cooperation and patience, as well as the media for sustained coverage that boosted public awareness and promoted the positive image of rail transportation.

Commitment to Improved Rail Services

The NRC reaffirmed its commitment to enhancing efficiency, comfort, and safety across all train services nationwide.

Opeifa reiterated that the corporation remains aligned with the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda, pledging to expand access to rail transportation and implement people-focused initiatives that directly impact the lives of Nigerians.
