Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has announced the cancellation of the weekly sit-at-home order for Monday across the South-East region of Nigeria. In a statement released today, Kanu called on residents to resume normal business activities and for students to return to schools.

The sit-at-home directive, which urged residents to stay indoors every Monday as a form of protest, has been in effect in various states of the Southeast for several months. It has frequently disrupted economic activities and kept markets, schools, and offices closed.

In his message, Kanu said the suspension of the order was intended to allow citizens to focus on education, commerce, and other productive engagements without restrictions.

Reactions to the announcement have been mixed, with some residents welcoming the shift as a relief for businesses and families, while others say they remain cautious given the history of enforcement around the sit-at-home policy.

Officials in the affected states are yet to issue formal responses to Kanu’s announcement.
