The National Youth Amalgamation Umbrella of Nigeria has rejected recent claims by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan that the country’s security strategy is failing, describing her remarks as misleading and inconsistent with realities on the ground.
The group, led by Comrade Charles Omeke, issued a statement defending the performance of Nigeria’s armed forces, asserting that ongoing military operations have yielded measurable progress in addressing security challenges.
Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan had earlier raised concerns over worsening insecurity in parts of the country, arguing that existing military approaches have not delivered meaningful results. Her comments have contributed to growing public discourse amid persistent threats from insurgency, banditry, and other forms of violence.
Responding to the criticism, the youth organization emphasized what it described as “significant operational gains” recorded by troops across multiple regions. The group highlighted recent offensives, improved intelligence-sharing, and strengthened collaboration with local communities as evidence of advancement.
“The narrative that nothing is being achieved is incorrect,” the statement read. “Nigerian troops continue to make daily sacrifices, and there are visible improvements in stability, particularly in areas that were previously volatile.”
The organization also pointed to ongoing military reforms, including modernization initiatives and expanded training programs, aimed at enhancing the country’s long-term security capacity.
While acknowledging recent incidents of violence, including attacks in Jos, the group urged caution in evaluating the military’s overall performance based on isolated events. It expressed sympathy to victims and their families while stressing the complexity of Nigeria’s security landscape.
“We understand the challenges involved and remain committed to supporting lasting solutions,” Omeke said. “It is unfair to judge the entirety of ongoing efforts based on a single incident.”
