The Deputy Governor of Kebbi State, Senator Umar Abubakar Tafida, has officially inaugurated 24 sub-committees ahead of the 2026 Argungu International Fishing and Cultural Festival.
Senator Tafida, who also serves as Chairman of the Main Organising Committee, described the Argungu Fishing Festival as a unifying cultural event that promotes peace, unity, and mutual understanding among diverse communities.
He said the globally recognised festival remains a strong symbol of the Argungu Emirate’s rich heritage while showcasing Kebbi State’s cultural diversity and tourism potential.
“This festival is more than a competition; it is a celebration of our identity, culture, and unity as a people,” the Deputy Governor said.
Senator Tafida urged members of the newly inaugurated sub-committees to work with commitment and professionalism to ensure a successful outing, noting that the event is expected to attract local and international visitors.
He assured the committees of the state government’s full support and encouraged close collaboration with relevant agencies to guarantee smooth planning and execution.
According to him, the Argungu Fishing Festival plays a critical role in boosting tourism, stimulating local economic activities, and projecting Kebbi State’s cultural image to the world.
The inauguration, he said, marks a major milestone in preparations for the 2026 edition and called on all stakeholders to support efforts aimed at ensuring a peaceful and successful festival for the socioeconomic development of the state.
In a joint meeting between the Main Committee and the Local Organising Committee held shortly after the inauguration, the Emir of Argungu, Alhaji Sama’ila Muhammad Mera, called on the general public to strictly adhere to the rules guiding the festival.
“Fishermen must wait for the official gunshot after the President and other important personalities are seated before entering the river,” the Emir cautioned.
The Emir also highlighted security considerations before, during, and after the festival, stressing that safety remains a collective responsibility of government, organisers, and the public.
Meanwhile, the Director-General of the festival, Alhaji Sufiyanu Garba Bena, formally announced the chairmen, vice chairmen, and secretaries of the 24 sub-committees inaugurated for the 2026 event.
The Bureau News reports that preparations are expected to intensify in the coming months as Kebbi State positions itself to host another successful edition of the iconic cultural festival.
