Several states, including Kaduna, Nasarawa, Bauchi, and Jigawa, have ramped up efforts to avert a worsening flood crisis. According to figures from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), at least 232 people have lost their lives, while over 121,000 have been displaced due to floods that swept through various parts of the country.

The 2025 flood dashboard indicates that approximately 339,658 individuals have experienced some form of loss, with 681 sustaining injuries. The death toll, concentrated in seven states, is highest in Niger State, which recorded 163 fatalities, followed by Adamawa with 59, and several others contributing to the grim total.

The floods have also caused significant property damage, affecting 42,301 houses and destroying around 48,447 hectares of cultivated farmland. Notably impacted states include Lagos, where over 57,000 individuals were affected, and Adamawa, which reported significant displacements and fatalities.

NEMA has identified urgent needs for victims, including food, shelter, health services, and livelihood support. However, response efforts face challenges, primarily due to resource shortages and the inaccessibility of flooded communities.

In Gombe State, local authorities have reported the displacement of hundreds of households, with at least 15 lives lost since the rainy season began. The Gombe State Emergency Management Agency has confirmed that 986 households have been affected, with ongoing efforts to provide relief.

Similarly, in Sokoto, recent torrential rains have devastated numerous communities, destroying approximately 2,200 houses and displacing more than 5,300 households.

In Kano State, the rainy season has caused significant destruction, with strong winds uprooting roofs and damaging homes. Local officials are currently compiling reports on the extent of the damage.

Nasarawa State has intensified its awareness campaigns, urging residents in flood-prone areas to relocate to higher ground. The state has also provided temporary settlement venues for displaced persons.

In contrast, Jigawa State reports a relatively calm situation due to proactive measures, with no major displacements recorded. The state government has invested significantly in flood mitigation efforts, including dredging rivers and constructing embankments.

As the floods continue to impact various regions, state governments are working to provide immediate relief and develop long-term strategies for disaster preparedness and mitigation. Residents are urged to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions during this critical period.
