APC Waives Screening for Tinubu Ahead of Presidential Primaries

The National Working Committee (NWC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has waived the screening requirement for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of the party’s presidential primaries, declaring him duly cleared to participate.

The decision was reached during the NWC’s 188th meeting held on May 6, 2026, and was disclosed in a statement issued by the APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka.

According to the statement, the committee relied on provisions of the party’s constitution to grant the waiver, citing Tinubu’s status as incumbent president, his prior clearance in 2022, and widespread endorsements from party stakeholders.

NWC Cites Constitutional Powers, Prior Clearance

“This decision was made pursuant to the powers conferred on the NWC under Article 13.4 (xiii) and (xiv) of the Constitution of APC to organise and supervise the Party’s primaries and, in special circumstances, grant waivers in the best interest of the Party,” the statement read.

The NWC noted that President Tinubu had already undergone screening and was cleared ahead of the 2022 presidential primaries, making a repeat process unnecessary.

It added that compelling the president to appear again before a screening committee would be redundant given his current position as leader of the party.

Endorsements Strengthen Waiver Decision

The committee also referenced the president’s endorsement by key party organs, including the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF), members of the National Assembly, and other stakeholders.

These endorsements were reaffirmed during the APC National Summit held on May 22, 2025, alongside other statutory party engagements.

APC Extends Deadlines for Aspirants

Meanwhile, the APC has extended the deadlines for the sale and submission of expression of interest and nomination forms for aspirants ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The party also adjusted its screening timetable as part of efforts to accommodate more participants in the ongoing electoral process.

The Bureau News reports that the latest decision signals early consolidation of support within the ruling party as preparations intensify for the 2027 elections.
