The Kebbi State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening urban renewal and maintaining environmental discipline across the state, with investments exceeding ₦7 billion targeted at key infrastructure projects.
The Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Hayatudeen Ahmad Bawa, disclosed this in Birnin Kebbi while presenting an update on the ministry’s activities and achievements.
According to him, the administration’s urban renewal strategy is designed to transform Birnin Kebbi and other major towns into modern, economically viable, and livable urban centres.
“Our goal is to reposition Kebbi’s urban centres as hubs of growth, improve infrastructure, and enhance the overall quality of life for residents,” he said.
₦7bn Streetlight Project Boosts Security, Night Economy
Bawa revealed that over ₦7 billion has been committed to the procurement and installation of solar-powered streetlights across major towns including Birnin Kebbi, Zuru, Yauri, Argungu, and Bunza.
He explained that the project has significantly improved visibility, strengthened security, and enhanced commercial activities, particularly at night.
The initiative has also contributed to beautifying the urban landscape and creating a more attractive environment for residents and investors.
Road Upgrades, Infrastructure Development Ongoing
The commissioner highlighted ongoing road upgrades and expansion projects aimed at easing traffic congestion and improving connectivity within urban areas.
He listed the transformation of key roundabouts such as Khalifa, Yar Yara, Plus Centre, and Kawara, as well as the construction of a new city gate at Kofa Sabuwa as part of the government’s infrastructure drive.
Flood Control, Environmental Measures Intensified
On environmental management, Bawa said the government has intensified flood control measures through large-scale drainage clearing, evacuation of blocked channels, and expansion of drainage systems in critical areas.
He noted that these interventions are necessary to reduce the impact of seasonal flooding and ensure a cleaner and healthier environment.
Digital Communication Initiative Introduced
The ministry has also introduced modern communication tools, including the installation of LCD screens at strategic locations in Birnin Kebbi to provide residents with real-time information on government programmes and activities.
The initiative, according to Bawa, is aimed at improving transparency and strengthening communication between the government and the public.
Government Reaffirms Commitment to Public Engagement
Earlier, the Commissioner for Information and Culture, Alhaji Yakubu Ahmed, said the inter-ministerial briefing was part of efforts to keep citizens informed about government policies and achievements.
He noted that the platform enables ministries to present their performance while promoting transparency and accountability.
He also called on the media to continue supporting the government by disseminating accurate and timely information to the public.
The Bureau News reports that the urban renewal initiatives form part of broader efforts by the Kebbi State Government to modernise infrastructure and improve living standards across the state.
