Ibaji Assembly Race: Chief Peter Egwudah Withdraws, Reaffirms Loyalty to APC

Chief Peter Egwudah has formally withdrawn from the Ibaji State Constituency legislative race, bringing an end to months of political consultations and preparations ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement made available to The Bureau News, Egwudah said his decision followed extensive engagement with stakeholders across Ibaji Local Government Area and a recent consultation with the Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Usman Ododo.
According to him, his initial decision to contest was driven by a commitment to strengthen representative leadership and amplify the voices of his constituents at the state and national levels.
“My aspiration was rooted in a genuine desire to improve governance, give our people a stronger voice, and create opportunities for collaboration that would benefit Ibaji communities and Kogi State at large,” he stated.
Consultations and Decision to Step Down
Egwudah explained that his political ambition was built on widespread consultations and strong grassroots support, coupled with assurances from party leadership on fairness and adherence to democratic principles.
However, he expressed concerns over recent developments within the political process, which he said fell short of expected democratic standards.
He noted that after discussions with Governor Ododo on May 3, 2026, he resolved not to proceed with obtaining the Expression of Interest and Nomination Form, effectively ending his bid for the State House of Assembly seat.
“In the deepest respect for His Excellency and the leadership of our great party, I have decided to step down from the race,” he said.
Appeal for Calm Among Supporters
Addressing his supporters, Egwudah acknowledged the disappointment that may arise from his decision and urged calm, patience, and continued unity.
He assured them that their collective aspirations for credible leadership remain valid and would not be abandoned.
“I understand the weight of expectations from our people. I urge everyone to remain calm and steadfast as we continue to pursue progress for Ibaji,” he added.
Commitment to APC and Community Development
Despite stepping down, Egwudah reaffirmed his loyalty to the All Progressives Congress (APC) and pledged to work towards the success of credible candidates in the forthcoming elections.
He emphasized his continued dedication to community development, youth empowerment, and good governance across Ibaji Local Government Area.
The former aspirant also expressed gratitude to Governor Ododo, APC leadership at the state and local levels, traditional rulers, religious leaders, and various community groups for their support throughout his political journey.
“I remain committed, as I have been for over a decade, to the development of our communities and the empowerment of our people,” he said.
