NSCDC Kebbi Marks International Civil Defence Day 2026, Calls for Stronger Environmental Risk Management – The Bureau News | Nigeria News Today

The Bureau News reports that the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Kebbi State Command, has commemorated the 2026 International Civil Defence Day with a renewed call for strengthened environmental risk management and collective action toward building a resilient and sustainable society.

The event was held at the NSCDC State Headquarters in Birnin Kebbi under the global theme: “Managing Environmental Risk for a Resilient and Sustainable Future.”

Nigeria News Today: NSCDC Highlights Environmental Threats

Speaking at the ceremony, the Kebbi State Commandant, Kabiru Abubakar Alkamawa, noted that environmental challenges such as flooding, desertification, erosion, pollution, and climate change pose serious threats to lives, livelihoods, and critical national infrastructure.

He explained that the mandate of the Corps extends beyond emergency response to include prevention, preparedness, mitigation, and community resilience.

According to him, proactive environmental risk management remains central to sustainable development and national security.

The Bureau News: Commitment to Proactive Civil Defence Operations

Alkamawa reaffirmed the commitment of the Corps to public sensitisation campaigns, disaster risk reduction initiatives, enforcement of safety regulations, protection of critical national assets, and rapid emergency response mechanisms.

He stressed that effective environmental risk management requires strong collaboration among government institutions, traditional leaders, civil society organisations, the private sector, and citizens.

The event attracted senior officers of the Corps, representatives of sister security agencies, key stakeholders, and members of the media.

International Civil Defence Day 2026 Significance

International Civil Defence Day underscores the importance of civil defence organisations in safeguarding lives and property, promoting disaster preparedness, and strengthening coordination among emergency and security stakeholders.

The programme featured expert lectures and reviews focused on environmental risk management, resilience building, and sustainable development.

The Kebbi State Command of the NSCDC assured residents of its continued commitment to ensuring public safety, protecting critical infrastructure, and supporting national development through effective civil defence operations.
