By Aliyu Usman, Birnin Kebbi

The National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), Kebbi State Council, has applauded Gov Idris for what it described as breaking a 20-year stagnation in healthcare manpower expansion in the state.

The development is one of the key stories shaping Nigeria News Today, particularly within the health and public sector workforce reform space.

Nigeria News Today: NANNM Applauds Healthcare Expansion

In a statement issued on Monday, the Kebbi State Council Chairman of NANNM, Kelani Abdulwaliyu, said successive administrations over the past two decades failed to expand health training institutions in the state.

“For over twenty years, successive administrations in the state have not been able to expand manpower in health institutions. The existing School of Nursing and Midwifery has remained the only one since its establishment,” he stated.

He noted that while some states operate three to four government-owned Colleges of Nursing Sciences, Kebbi had operated only one institution, which could not meet the growing manpower demands of the state.

New College of Nursing and Midwifery Established

According to the association, the establishment of an additional College of Nursing and Midwifery represents a significant milestone in addressing the long-standing manpower gap.

NANNM described the move as a step in the right direction and pledged its full support at both institutional and professional levels.

Absorption of 1,000 Healthcare Students into Civil Service

The association also commended the state government for absorbing no fewer than 1,000 healthcare student nurses into the main civil service.

It stated that the decision would substantially strengthen healthcare delivery across facilities in Kebbi State by improving staff availability and service efficiency.

According to The Bureau News, workforce expansion in healthcare remains a critical pillar in improving primary and secondary healthcare systems across Nigeria.

Commitment to Closing the Manpower Gap

NANNM reaffirmed its support for the Idris-led administration, assuring that nurses and midwives in the state would work diligently to close the manpower deficit and enhance healthcare outcomes.

On the sidelines, the association also congratulated the governor and the people of Kebbi State for the successful hosting of the Argungu International Fishing Festival.
