Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State, who is also the Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors’ Forum, expressed confidence that the party will remain robust despite recent defections to the All Progressives Congress (APC). Speaking to journalists in Abuja, he emphasized that the PDP is actively working to stabilize its ranks and rebuild public trust.

While acknowledging his concerns over the defections, Governor Mohammed stressed that leadership comes with burdens and that many efforts are underway to maintain party unity. He accused the APC-led federal government of attempting to weaken the opposition through coercive tactics and aiming to establish a one-party state.

Despite the defections, he believes that grassroots support for the PDP remains strong. “Even those who left are not finding it easier because most of the people at the grassroots level are PDP and are not happy with the defections,” he stated. He reassured that he himself is committed to the PDP and sees no division within the party in Bauchi.

Governor Mohammed hinted that more defections might occur, but he remains firm that the PDP structure in his state is solid. He noted that many defections are driven by external influences, asserting that the desire for change among Nigerians remains aligned with the PDP.

He also addressed potential threats to the upcoming party convention, stating that the PDP leadership is working diligently to resolve internal disputes and litigations aimed at destabilizing preparations. He affirmed that the PDP is more organized than many opposition parties, with a unified leadership structure.

Regarding speculations about other governors’ intentions to defect, he clarified that no formal decisions have been made, particularly concerning Governor Peter Mbah, who he described as a respected colleague.

On the topic of the party’s future, Governor Mohammed expressed optimism for a successful 2027 campaign, welcoming prominent figures who wish to return to the PDP. He reiterated his commitment to the party and the hope for visionary leadership to emerge, capable of challenging the APC’s political strategies.
