The Governor of Anambra State, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, has dismissed eight operatives of the Agunechemba Vigilante Group after they were caught on video brutalizing and stripping a female National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member in Oba, Idemili South Local Government Area.
The Incident
On July 23, 2025, the vigilantes stormed a corps members’ lodge, accusing occupants of internet fraud despite being shown valid NYSC identification. In the process, a corps member, Jennifer Edema Elohor, was beaten, stripped, and humiliated in public.
Government Action
Governor Soludo condemned the act as “a gross abuse of authority.” He ordered the immediate dismissal of the eight operatives, who have since been handed over to the police for prosecution.
The state government also took responsibility for the victim’s welfare by:
-
Paying her medical bills
-
Replacing her stolen and damaged belongings, including her phone and laptop
-
Issuing a public apology to her, her family, and the NYSC
Outrage and Condemnations
-
Senator Ede Dafinone described the attack as “barbaric and a disgrace to national service,” urging full prosecution of the offenders and better protection for corps members.
-
Peter Obi, former Labour Party presidential candidate, condemned the act as “primitive wickedness” and called it an assault on humanity.
-
The NYSC Directorate labeled the incident “unacceptable,” confirming it was reported to the police.
-
HURIWA (Human Rights Writers Association) criticized Soludo’s response as inadequate, demanding stricter accountability.
-
Mrs. Nonye Soludo, the governor’s wife, said the humiliation was “deeply troubling” and urged dignity in all security operations.
Police Investigation
The Anambra State Police confirmed that the suspects have been arrested. However, the investigation has slowed because the victim has yet to appear to give a formal statement.
