The Bureau News Nigeria reports that the Chairman of Yagba West Local Government Area in Kogi, Mr. Tosin Olokun, has imposed an indefinite dusk-to-dawn curfew across communities in the area, amid rising security concerns such as kidnapping and other criminal activities.
Curfew Announced After Emergency Security Meeting
The announcement was made following an emergency security meeting on Wednesday in Odo-ere. The curfew, which will begin at 7:00 p.m. and end at 6:00 a.m. daily, is designed to address the surge in criminal activity within the local government area.
Details of the Curfew and Enforcement Measures
Mr. Olokun explained that the curfew hours had been adjusted and enforcement strengthened to ensure that businesses and social activities do not continue during the restricted hours. He emphasized that all shops and business premises must be completely closed during the curfew hours, particularly beer parlours and nightlife establishments.
He also stated that any business outlet found operating within the restricted hours would be sealed, and the owners would face prosecution under the law. Additionally, all forms of transportation, including motorcycles, tricycles, and both private and commercial vehicles, are prohibited during the curfew period. Vehicles passing through Yagba West from other towns or states will not be allowed to transit during curfew hours.
Security Measures and Penalties for Violations
Any violation of the curfew will result in the arrest of the offenders, impounding of their vehicles, and prosecution in accordance with the law. Mr. Olokun also advised residents who rely on rural routes or remote areas for their daily activities to exercise caution and restrict movements to safe hours outside the curfew period.
Why the Curfew is Necessary for Security
The chairman noted that while the measures may be stringent, they are necessary to address the current security challenges. The curfew is aimed at preventing further infiltration by criminals and ensuring the safety of residents. The government has emphasized its commitment to securing the local government and restoring peace in the area.
Collaboration with Security Agencies
Mr. Olokun urged all residents, traditional rulers, youth groups, transport unions, and community leaders to cooperate fully with security agencies. He highlighted the importance of providing timely intelligence to assist ongoing security operations.
Continuous Review of the Curfew
The Chairman assured that the curfew would be continuously reviewed in line with ongoing security assessments, and adjustments would be made as necessary to ensure its effectiveness in maintaining peace.
