The Kebbi State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has distributed palliatives, including 50kg bags of rice and N10,000 cash, to the families of 30 deceased members. This initiative aims to offer support to the families of journalists who have passed away.
Kebbi NUJ’s Ongoing Support for Journalists
The distribution of palliatives has been a part of the Kebbi NUJ’s ongoing efforts to assist journalists and their families in times of loss. Comrade Bello Sarki Abubakar, the Chairman of the Kebbi NUJ, confirmed that the program, which started over 11 years ago, has been continuously supported by successive administrations within the union. The union’s prudent savings and solidarity have made these distributions possible.
Governor Nasir Idris Acknowledged for His Contribution
Comrade Sarki also expressed his appreciation to Kebbi’s Governor, Nasir Idris, for his consistent support toward journalists in the state. The Chairman noted that the governor’s commitment to the welfare of journalists significantly strengthens the profession.
NUJ’s Solidarity with Members Facing Hardships
As part of its efforts, the Kebbi NUJ has shown continuous support for members, especially those dealing with health challenges and other adversities. Recently, the union visited the family of late Sani Mahuta, a journalist from Kebbi Radio, who tragically passed away in a motor accident. During the visit, the union presented a 50kg bag of rice and N50,000 as a token of solidarity.
Training and Retraining of Journalists in Kebbi
Comrade Sarki revealed that the Kebbi NUJ is focusing on the professional development of its members through training and retraining programs. The state government’s partnership with the union continues to play an essential role in the growth of journalism in the region.
Appeal for a New NUJ Secretariat
As the state government relocates ministries to a new complex, Comrade Sarki appealed for the establishment of a befitting secretariat for the NUJ. He emphasized that this would help in better accommodating the union’s activities and members.
NUJ’s Unity and Support from Chapels
Comrade Sarki commended the support and cooperation from various chapels within the NUJ, highlighting that their collective efforts are the foundation of the union’s success.
Beneficiaries Express Gratitude
On behalf of the beneficiaries, Hajiya Hafsat Hamza Galadima thanked the Kebbi NUJ for its generous gesture, stating that it would significantly help alleviate the challenges faced by the families. She also appreciated the union’s assistance in ensuring the successful processing and collection of the death benefits of her late husband, Hamza Galadima, a former Council Chairman.
Distribution to NUJ Chapels
In addition to the direct support for families, the six chapels under the Kebbi NUJ each received N80,000 and five bags of rice as part of the palliative distribution program. This gesture further strengthened the unity within the union.
