The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has taken significant action by shutting down 13,597,057 social media accounts across platforms such as TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, and X (formerly Twitter). This move was prompted by violations of Nigeria’s Code of Practice for online platforms, specifically related to posting offensive content.
The enforcement action followed the submission of the 2024 Compliance Report from major service providers like Google, Microsoft, and TikTok. Despite the extensive shutdown, NITDA praised these platforms for their cooperation in adhering to Nigeria’s regulations, developed jointly with the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC).
Key highlights from the 2024 Compliance Report include:
- Registered complaints: 754,629
- Content removed: 58,909,112
- Content reuploaded after appeal: 420,439
- Accounts shut down/deactivated: 13,597,057
NITDA emphasized that these figures reflect the ongoing efforts of online platforms to protect users and eliminate harmful content in accordance with national laws. The agency reiterated that all online platforms operating in Nigeria must be locally registered, comply with tax requirements, and adhere to the established Code of Practice.
Looking ahead, NITDA plans to continue collaborating with industry stakeholders, civil society, and regulators to enhance user safety, promote digital literacy, and ensure transparency within Nigeria’s digital ecosystem.
