The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Plateau State has rejected former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s criticism of President Bola Tinubu’s recent visit to Jos. The APC stated that Atiku “lacks the standing to complain on behalf of the people of the State.”

In a statement issued on Monday by acting publicity secretary Shittu Bamaiyi, the Plateau APC characterized Atiku’s remarks as politically motivated and “uninformed.”

President Tinubu attended a funeral service for Mama Lydia at the Church of Christ in Nations headquarters in Jos over the weekend, where he called for unity, peace, and tolerance among residents, urging them to rise above religious and ethnic differences.

Atiku condemned Tinubu’s visit, describing it as a “sad reflection of priorities and a mockery of leadership.” He argued that the President should have focused on commiserating with victims of ongoing violence and displacement in the region.

However, the Plateau APC countered that Atiku’s comments overlooked the responsibilities of state governors in maintaining security and failed to acknowledge the support that the President has provided for local security efforts. The party accused Atiku of politicizing tragedy for personal gain.

The statement read, “By all standards, Alhaji Atiku belongs to the class of the nation’s statesmen, yet his comments reflect a lack of understanding regarding the security situation in Plateau.”

The APC defended President Tinubu, emphasizing that as Commander-in-Chief, he bears the responsibility for the security of citizens, while state governors also have a role in protecting lives and property. The party noted that in crisis situations, the President typically directs security agencies to restore peace and order.

They pointed out that Governor Caleb Mutfwang had publicly acknowledged federal support for security operations in Plateau, and highlighted the positive reception Tinubu received during his visit.

While the APC acknowledged that discussions on tackling insecurity are necessary, they deemed Atiku’s criticism of a presidential condolence visit as misplaced.

The party urged critics to focus on practical solutions rather than ceremonial visits, stating that the people of Plateau need more military resources and personnel to effectively combat insurgency.
