PSC Tightens Police Promotion Standards: Fail Three Times, Face Retirement

The Police Service Commission (PSC) has implemented a mandatory promotion examination for 30 senior police officers, warning that those who fail the test three times will face retirement. The examination took place at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja and included various ranks, such as Assistant Inspector General, Commissioners, and Deputy Commissioners of Police.

PSC Chairman, retired Deputy Inspector General Hashimu Argungu, stated that the examination will be a permanent aspect of police career progression. The new system aims to enhance competency within the Nigeria Police Force and restore public confidence. Argungu emphasized the importance of skills in today’s policing environment.

The PSC is tightening procedures to eliminate errors in promotions, ensuring that only qualified individuals are promoted. Argungu highlighted that no deceased or retired officers should appear on promotion lists. This initiative represents a significant shift in the promotion process within the Nigeria Police Force, aiming to ensure that only capable officers advance in their careers.
