In a concerted move to enhance flood disaster response and preparedness, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), in collaboration with the Kebbi State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), has conducted a four-day simulation exercise in Birnin Kebbi.

The event, which took place as part of a broader strategy to curb the devastating effects of seasonal flooding, brought together critical stakeholders from security agencies, emergency responders, and community groups.

“This simulation isn’t just an exercise—it’s a vital tool for building a coordinated and resilient disaster response system across Nigeria,”
said Air Commodore Kenneth Obong, NEMA’s Director of Search and Rescue, who led the drill.

The programme focused on improving coordination between federal and state institutions and empowering communities with practical flood response skills.

Representing Governor Nasir Idris, the Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, Muhammad Hamidu Jar-kuka, commended the federal government’s continuous support for disaster victims in the state.

He emphasized the state’s readiness to partner with federal agencies to strengthen disaster risk reduction strategies.

“Flooding doesn’t just damage property—it disrupts livelihoods and tears at the fabric of communities. We must work proactively to save lives,”
remarked Alhaji Sani Lokoja, Director of NEMA’s North-West Zone.

Lokoja praised the Kebbi State Government, security agencies, local divers, and the media for their collaboration in this effort.

The simulation drew participants from the Nigerian Army, Police, NSCDC, Immigration Service, Federal Fire Service, local rescue swimmers, and media personnel.

This initiative aligns with Nigeria News Today headlines about disaster readiness and echoes The Bureau News’ mission to spotlight people-centered development efforts.
