Nigeria, 144 Others Back Abbas UN Video Address Despite US, Israel Opposition

Nigeria and 144 other UN member states voted in favor of allowing Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to deliver a video address at the United Nations General Assembly, rejecting opposition from the United States and Israel.

The move handed a diplomatic boost to the Palestinian Authority, which has long sought greater international recognition amid the stalled Middle East peace process. Washington and Tel Aviv had argued that granting Abbas a pre-recorded slot undermines direct negotiations.

The strong backing reflects rising global frustration over the lack of progress on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and signals broader support for Palestinian representation on the world stage.
