The High Court sitting in Lafia, the capital of Nasarawa State, has sentenced Oluwatimileyin Ajayi to death by hanging for the brutal killing of Salome Adaidu, a serving member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

Delivering the judgment, Justice Simon Aboki found the accused guilty of culpable homicide, having murdered and dismembered the victim, an act that shook the local community and drew national condemnation.

Ajayi was charged under Section 221 of the Penal Code applicable in Northern Nigeria, which prescribes a mandatory death sentence upon conviction for culpable homicide.

The gruesome murder reportedly occurred during Salome’s national assignment in Nasarawa, sparking widespread outrage and calls for justice from youth advocacy groups and the NYSC community.

While delivering the verdict, Justice Aboki described the crime as “cold-blooded and inhumane,” stating that the evidence presented in court was “overwhelming and conclusive.”

“This court has no option than to apply the full weight of the law. The defendant is hereby sentenced to death by hanging,” the judge ruled.

Further details surrounding the case and sentencing are expected to be released in the coming days.
