In a historic move for Nigeria’s education sector, the Federal College of Education (FCE), Okene, has appointed Dr. Ibrahim Ismaila Mosimabale as its new substantive Provost, effective September 27, 2025. This landmark decision marks the first time the institution will be led by an academic who rose through its own ranks.

The Governing Council’s selection of Dr. Mosimabale – a seasoned educator with over three decades of service at the college – has been widely celebrated as a triumph of meritocracy. The new Provost previously served as Chief Lecturer in the Department of Social Studies, Director of Examinations, and member of the College Governing Council.

“This appointment isn’t just personal; it’s institutional history,” Dr. Mosimabale told The Bureau News shortly after the announcement. “Having spent my entire career here, I understand our unique challenges and opportunities better than anyone.”

The 57-year-old academic began his journey at FCE Okene as a fresh graduate, eventually earning his PhD from the University of Benin after obtaining earlier degrees from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. Colleagues describe him as “the institutional memory personified” – a leader who has witnessed the college’s evolution firsthand.

Education analysts highlight the significance of this appointment in Nigeria’s tertiary education landscape. “For decades, federal colleges recycled administrators from other institutions,” said Prof. Amina Bello, an education policy expert. “FCE Okene has broken that mold by promoting from within its best and brightest.”

The announcement has sparked celebrations across Kogi State, with Governor Usman Ododo calling it “a victory for homegrown talent.” Alumni associations have pledged support for the new administration, while students expressed optimism about anticipated reforms.

Dr. Mosimabale inherits an institution facing typical challenges of federal colleges – infrastructure deficits, funding gaps, and the need for curriculum modernization. However, insiders say his intimate knowledge of the college positions him uniquely to address these issues.

“My vision is simple,” the new Provost stated. “We will build on our strengths while aggressively addressing our weaknesses. Expect greater community engagement, digital transformation, and partnerships that benefit both students and staff.”

As the college prepares for transition ceremonies in October, all eyes will be on this trailblazing academic whose career trajectory has now become institutional legend.
