Barring any last-minute changes, the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, is expected to officially resign from his position on Friday, multiple party sources have confirmed.
According to insiders who spoke to The Bureau News, the decision is part of a broader restructuring strategy by the ruling party ahead of the 2027 general elections. Ganduje is likely to be replaced temporarily by one of the party’s national vice chairmen, pending a formal convention scheduled for December 2025.
This planned resignation appears to be the party’s response to persistent agitation by stakeholders from the North Central region, who have been demanding that the APC chairmanship return to their zone. Ganduje, who hails from Kano in the North West, was appointed in August 2023 following the resignation of his predecessor, Abdullahi Adamu.
Despite Ganduje’s efforts to consolidate power within the APC, mounting opposition within the party and sustained pressure from leaders in the North Central geopolitical zone have continued to challenge his leadership.
“He has been persuaded to step down as a sacrifice for party unity,” a senior party source familiar with the matter disclosed under condition of anonymity. “It’s all part of the political calculation to balance interests ahead of 2027.”
The APC leadership is reportedly working to calm internal tensions and present a more united front as it prepares for future elections. The expected resignation also underscores the party’s sensitivity to regional power dynamics and internal zoning arrangements.
