Arise News Anchor, Sommie, Killed in Katampe Armed Robbery Incident

Tragedy struck in the early hours of Monday as Arise News anchor and producer, Sommie, lost her life in what has been reported as an armed robbery attack in Katampe, Abuja.

Sommie, who would have turned 30 on December 26, was also a lawyer and former beauty queen. Beyond her journalism career, she was passionate about empowering young girls through her initiative, She Takes Up Space, which has positively impacted hundreds of school-aged girls in the Federal Capital Territory.

Described as vibrant and full of life, Sommie’s sudden death has left colleagues, friends, and admirers in shock. Her passing has reignited concerns over recurring cases of violent robbery in Katampe, an area that has recorded multiple security incidents since 2016.

Observers and civil society voices are now calling on the government and security agencies to take decisive action to address insecurity in Abuja, stressing that the lives and dreams of young Nigerians should not be cut short in such tragic circumstances.

Her death comes as a painful reminder of the growing insecurity in the country, raising questions about the safety of young professionals who choose to live and work in Nigeria.
